The Kendall is a rehabilitated and affordable 41-unit residential apartment building in downtown Chicopee, MA. The three-story building was originally built in the mid-19th century as the Kendall House and in 2009 the non-profit Valley Opportunity Council (VOC) partnered with MBL to secure funding for rehabilitation. MBL leveraged over $6.6 million in federal and state Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, more than $1 million in soft debt and $200,000 in Chicopee City Home funds.
The rehabilitation replaced and updated inefficient major systems, substantially improving the energy efficiency of the property. Thirty-eight single rooms were converted into larger, enhanced Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Units with full kitchen and laundry amenities. It provides housing for formerly homeless and low-income individuals, further contributing to the stock of high-quality, affordable housing in Chicopee.
